​Middle School English 2 – Home or Group Curriculum (Grades 7–8)


This English course is designed for middle school students who are ready to sharpen their writing skills and prepare for the demands of high school composition. Students review grammar, practice vocabulary and spelling through word roots, and build confidence across multiple writing styles.

The Home & Group version includes the student materials used in One Day Academy’s Middle School English 2 course, along with a leader guide for parents or tutors to lead once-a-week group instruction. Students complete the remaining assignments at home under a parent’s supervision.

Students will apply grammar knowledge from previous courses into their writing, learning how to compose narrative, topical, literature-based, and creative responses. Vocabulary instruction focuses on word derivation and word usage in context, with weekly charts that integrate new vocabulary into writing assignments. Grammar is taught as a brief in-class review and reinforced through homework using Easy Grammar Ultimate Series Grade 8.

  • Parental responsibilities include grading any work with an answer key (spelling, vocabulary, and grammar), recording those grades, and submitting them to the teacher or leader as requested. Teachers or group leaders are responsible for grading compositions, tests, and issuing final grades.
Purpose
The purpose and goal of this course is to take the focused grammar study from earlier middle and elementary English courses and implement them in students’ writing. This course will prepare students for the rigor of high school writing by laying a strong foundation. Students will also study vocabulary, learning how to derive the meaning of words based on the root.

Process
Writing
  • Students will utilize and apply the grammar skills from other English courses.
  • A variety or writing styles will be explored. Narratives, topical, literature response, and poetry are just a few types of writing which will be examined.
  • The foundation for high school writing will be laid.
Grammar
  • Easy Grammar Ultimate Series Grade 8 will be  utilized.
  • A brief grammar lesson is included. Grammar will mostly be covered as a review.
  • Individual work will help reinforce and review basic grammar skills.
Vocabulary/Spelling
  • Weekly vocabulary charts.
  • Vocabulary/Spelling words that teach derivation of words from roots.
  • Vocabulary/Spelling words which can be integrated into students’ writing.
