Biology 1 Instruction Set – Co-op & Classroom Curriculum (Ages 13–16)
Designed for high school students ages 13 to 16, this college-prep Biology 1 course provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of living organisms with an emphasis on fostering awe for God’s creation. This course earns one high school science credit and is typically taken alongside Algebra 1.
Students will master key scientific concepts including microscope skills, biological classification keys, the five biological kingdoms, chemistry of life, cytology, genetics, creation and evolution discussions, ecology, botany, and zoology. Hands-on labs may include dissections of a variety of specimens such as clam, grasshopper, perch, earthworm, crayfish, frog, flowers, and sheep eye, with specific activities chosen by the instructor.
The course features PowerPoint lectures to review material covered at home, hands-on experiments during class, and an emphasis on lab safety and best practices. Students take notes using the course supplement, with quizzes, exams, and module tests assigned by the instructor and typically completed at home under parental supervision.
A science project is required to complete the course, providing students an opportunity to apply scientific inquiry and critical thinking skills.
Prerequisites: Physical Science and Pre-Algebra.

Course Description:
The goal of this course is to develop an awe of God’s creation of living organisms. one high school credit
High school students typically take Biology 1 when taking Algebra 1. This course is a college-prep biology course that provides a strong background in scientific classification and terminology.
Content covered: microscope skills, biological keys, biological kingdoms, chemistry of life, cytology, genetics, creation/evolution, ecology, botany, and animals. Students may dissect a clam, grasshopper, perch, earthworm, crayfish, frog, flowers, and a mammalian sheep eye as determined by the instructor.
Labs will include a PowerPoint lecture over material covered at home prior to class. Students perform hands-on experiments. Safety protocol and best lab practices will be emphasized.
Students will take notes in the course supplement and the instructor will determine quizzes and exams. Module Tests are taken at home under parent supervision.
