American Literature (Grades 10–12)
This high school literature course explores the development of American culture and thought through the lens of poetry, short stories, and novels. Designed for students ages 15–18, the curriculum blends literary analysis with historical context and a Christian worldview.
In the first semester, students study American literature from the colonial period through the 19th century, focusing on how major authors reflected and shaped national identity. The second semester highlights 20th-century works that reveal the cultural shift away from Christian values and the effects of that transformation on American thought and storytelling.
Throughout the year, students will examine key literary tools such as characterization, setting, and irony. They will write analytical essays and participate in guided discussions that encourage thoughtful engagement with both text and theme.
Parents are responsible for purchasing the course workbook and assigned novels (print preferred). They will also help students manage reading schedules, complete assignments, and stay on track with weekly work.
- This course is ideal for students who have completed High School English 1 or can provide a writing sample for placement.
