High School English 1 (2023-24 Edition) (Ages 13–15, Grades 9–10)
This course introduces high school students to a broad range of writing styles and purposes alongside foundational literary analysis techniques. Designed for students who have completed Middle School English 2 or have instructor approval, it develops essential skills in narrative, descriptive, persuasive, informative, personal narrative, and creative writing.
Students begin with daily grammar and punctuation practice to review and strengthen their command of sentence structure. The curriculum also includes focused study of clauses and phrases to enhance sentence variety and complexity. Building on previous vocabulary work, students continue learning roots and derivatives to expand their language skills.
Writing instruction is scaffolded and purposeful, guiding students through multiple writing types and fostering literary analysis skills. Students analyze plot, literary terms, figurative language, imagery, and author techniques to deepen their appreciation and understanding of literature.
A key component of the course is research paper writing, introducing students to Modern Language Association (MLA) formatting and citation standards through a career research paper and presentation.
Parents play an important role by helping students establish consistent routines for daily grammar and writing practice and supporting homework and preparation efforts. Parents are responsible for grading assignments with answer keys, including vocabulary and grammar, while teachers evaluate all written compositions and exams. It is highly recommended that parents review and provide feedback on student writing before final drafts are submitted.
- This comprehensive course builds a solid foundation for high school English success and prepares students for advanced writing and literary studies.
