High School English 2 (2024-25 Edition) (Ages 16–18, Grades 11–12)
Building on prior writing and literature courses, High School English 2 challenges students to develop advanced rhetorical analysis, critical thinking, and evaluation skills. Designed for students who have completed High School English 1 (or equivalent) and ideally American Literature, this course equips learners with the research and writing capabilities necessary for success in higher education and the workplace.
Students engage deeply with a variety of texts, including essays, short fiction, speeches, and novels, to explore rhetorical appeals and techniques. They develop argumentation, persuasion, and perspective through writing essays, literary analyses, and a comprehensive research paper. The curriculum emphasizes peer review and revision to foster strong, polished writing.
Grammar reinforcement and vocabulary study are integrated throughout, supporting clear and effective communication. Students also learn and apply Modern Language Association (MLA) formatting and citation standards, preparing them for college-level research writing.
Parents support students by helping establish daily grammar and writing practice routines, monitoring homework, and assisting with preparation. Parents grade assignments that have answer keys, such as vocabulary and grammar exercises. Teachers grade all compositions, essays, and exams. It is strongly recommended that parents review and provide feedback on student writing before final submissions.
- This course provides a rigorous foundation in advanced English skills, preparing students for academic and professional writing demands.
