Middle School English 2 (Ages 12–14, Grades 7–8 Level)
Middle School English 2 is designed to help students bridge the gap between earlier English studies and the more rigorous writing demands of high school. This course emphasizes applying grammar skills in practical writing exercises, allowing students to build confidence and competence in their written communication.
Students will explore a variety of writing styles, including narratives, topical essays, literature responses, and poetry. This variety not only helps students find their voice but also prepares them for diverse writing assignments they will encounter in high school.
Grammar instruction centers around the Easy Grammar Ultimate Series Grade 8 textbook, with brief, focused lessons delivered during class. Grammar is mostly taught as a review, reinforcing foundational concepts through regular homework assignments designed to solidify understanding.
Vocabulary and spelling are integral parts of the curriculum, emphasizing the derivation of words from roots to help students expand their language skills and comprehension. Weekly vocabulary charts introduce new words that students are encouraged to integrate into their writing, enhancing both their verbal and written expression.
Parents play a critical role by grading assignments that include answer keys, such as spelling tests, vocabulary charts, and grammar exercises. Teachers maintain oversight by grading all compositions and exams, recording grades throughout the semester, and providing final evaluations. This partnership ensures students receive consistent feedback and support as they develop essential English skills.
