High School English 1 (Grades 9–10)
High School English 1 introduces students to a variety of writing types and literary analysis techniques. Students practice narrative, descriptive, persuasive, informative, personal narrative, and creative writing, along with basic essay writing and research skills.
The course includes daily grammar and punctuation exercises, study of sentence structure and vocabulary roots, and scaffolded instruction for different writing purposes. Literary analysis focuses on plot, literary terms, figurative language, imagery, and author techniques. Students also learn to write research papers using Modern Language Association (MLA) formatting and citation through a career research paper and presentation.
- Parents support students by helping establish a routine for daily grammar and sentence writing practice, supervising homework and class preparation, and grading assignments with answer keys (vocabulary and grammar). Teachers grade all writing, compositions, and exams. Parental review and feedback on writing drafts are highly recommended.
