Intro to Speech, Debate, & Mock Trial (Ages 12–14)
This middle school course offers a fun introduction to rhetoric, public speaking, debate, and mock trial. Designed for students aged 12 to 14, it serves as a foundation for high school courses like Classical Speech and competitive Mock Trial.
The course is divided into three units:
- Speech (Fall): Students learn about different types of speeches, focusing on informative and persuasive speaking. They will write and deliver their own speeches to build confidence and skills.
- Debate (Winter): Students explore debate formats, research techniques, and argumentation strategies. They will prepare and participate in Lincoln-Douglas style debates.
- Mock Trial (Spring): An introduction to civil and criminal trials, including rules of evidence and courtroom procedures. Students will role-play as attorneys and witnesses in a mock trial simulation.
- This course develops critical thinking, analytical abilities, and effective communication in a supportive and engaging environment.
