ASL 1 – American Sign Language Online Course Supplement (Grades 8–12)
This online course supplement introduces students to the fundamentals of American Sign Language, including vocabulary, grammar, and Deaf culture. Students begin developing both expressive and receptive signing skills through structured practice and real-world applications.
Taught using both ASL and spoken English, this course is designed to support students pursuing one full high school foreign language credit. Lessons include textbook and video instruction, group and individual signing, regular vocabulary review, and occasional student presentations.
Assignments include learning new signs and phrases, translating between English and ASL, and attending a Deaf community event. Daily review and internet access are essential, as students will complete frequent assignments and practice activities.
