Elements of Design (Ages 13–18)
This course bridges traditional art and graphic design, offering students a combined experience akin to Art III and an introduction to the world of commercial art. Building on skills developed in Building Art Skills, students will continue honing their eye-hand coordination through weekly homework sketches and focused drawing exercises.
The emphasis of this course lies in understanding the core concepts that make effective design—principles and elements of art—rather than learning specific computer software. While graphic design today is largely computer-based, this class focuses on the timeless fundamentals behind successful visual communication.
Students will work on projects that emulate real-world graphic design jobs, studying letterforms, marketing concepts, and how to thoughtfully apply design principles to solve visual problems. While no computers or software are required in class, students should have access to a computer and internet at home to complement their learning.
- This course demands more time and concentration than previous levels and is ideal for motivated teens interested in exploring both advanced drawing and graphic design.
