Nutrition, Fitness, and Physiology – Grades 10–12
This engaging course is designed for high school students interested in understanding how nutrition, fitness, and physiology contribute to overall physical and emotional wellness. Students will learn how to assess their own health and nutritional needs to make personalized choices rather than following generic guidelines.
The course covers essential topics including the roles of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates; the importance of vitamins and minerals; how the body processes food; reading and interpreting food labels; and planning balanced, healthful meals. A strong emphasis is placed on the benefits of regular exercise, with lessons on different types of exercise and their positive effects on the body.
Students will also explore key physiological processes such as digestion, absorption, insulin regulation, and energy production. The course addresses why chronic health issues like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension are increasingly common among teens today.
Additional important topics include eating disorders, food intolerances, celiac disease, weight management, sports nutrition, osteoporosis, and strategies for managing daily stress.
Prerequisite: Biology is required to fully grasp the physiological concepts presented.
- Ideal for students ages 15–18 who want to develop a well-rounded understanding of how diet, exercise, and body functions impact long-term health and wellness.
